School of Law Professor Cunningham Presented at the Conference on Promoting the Teaching of Legal Writing in Southern Africa

School of Law Professor Larry Cunningham presented at the "Conference on Promoting the Teaching of Legal Writing in Southern Africa," sponsored by APPEAL (Academics Promoting the Pedagogy of Effective Advocacy in Law) and the University of Pretoria Faculty of Law. 

The conference was held July 1 to July 4, 2009, in Pretoria, South Africa.  Professor Cunningham spoke about the integration of legal writing assignments with large, doctrinal courses.  Law schools in sub-Saharan Africa are particularly challenged by large class sizes, multiple official languages, and a lack of resources to teach skills in a hands-on manner. 

Professor Cunningham offered a number of strategies for teaching writing skills in such an environment.  The conference was attended by over 100 professors and lecturers, drawn from both the United States and Africa.
