August 2009--The Kappa Zeta Chapter, lead by Associate Professor
of Accounting and Taxation Patrick Colabella, has been recognized
internationally as a Distinguished Chapter of Beta Alpha Psi, a
nonprofit international honorary and service organization for
accounting, finance and information systems students at
AACSB-accredited universities.
The mission of Beta Alpha Psi includes: helping to build
professional relationships with peers, recognizing and rewarding
scholastic success, instilling commitment to lifelong professional
development, developing leadership skills, giving back to the
community and encouraging ethical business behavior.
Students who become members of this organization are
academically proficient, community-minded and responsible. They
must have a 3.0 GPA andgo through a rigorous pledge
period where they are required to participate in charitable
community activities as well as attend and participate in
professional interactions with firms that employ St. John’s
University students.
“Beta Alpha Psi is really a bridge to success in the financial
fields that we prepare our students for,” said Colabella. “It
instills in them the meaning of being a true professional. It
also fosters the values and culture that are consistent with
the St John's mission.”
To qualify for the Distinguished Chapter level, the 80 Tobin
students of the chapter need to go above and beyond the original
mission. Students are asked to participate in at least five annual
meetings, six professional activities, and one service act. There
are a minimum amount of hours needed per student per category,
which is calculated at the end of the academic year.
One of the professional activities Tobin students participated
in was the Deloitte Tax Case Study where students from colleges and
universities across the U.S. gather to test their knowledge,
problem-solving skills, and ability to work together as a team.
Students who participate have the opportunity to receive
scholarship offers from out-of state-colleges as well as from the
Deloitte tax department.
