Veronica Novy, M.S., P.D., Assistant to the Dean of the
College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions emceed the event.
She introduced Robert
A. Mangione, R.Ph., Ed.D., Dean, College of Pharmacy and Allied
Health Professions, who welcomed students, family, friends and
faculty to the reception. “We come here this evening to honor some
very special students who have worked hard this past academic year.
They stand on the shoulders of those who have gone before them,
including you, their parents and distinguished members of the St.
John’s College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions,” Dean
Mangione said.
S. Jennifer Miranda Velázquez, Ed.D., Assistant Dean for Allied
Health Programs, College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions
and Veronica Novy distributed awards to students in the College’s
allied health professions program. Students from the third- through
sixth-year classes of the College of Pharmacy and Allied Health
Professions then received awards and scholarships from pharmacy
companies, organizations and societies, which support the
College.
The
Memorial Awards, named for a donor’s deceased family member or a
deceased pharmacy professor, were presented by Dean Mangione. As he
presented each award to a student, Dean Mangione invited family of
those whom an award commemorates to come up and, with him, present
the award. The appearances of the families on stage allowed
students to personally thank these families.
Laura Gianni Augusto, Pharm.D., Assistant Dean for Experiential
Pharmacy Education, presented three of the College’s preceptors
with special awards for guiding pharmacy students working at
off-campus sites. John Buscini, B.S., Adjunct Instructor of
Clinical Pharmacy Practice from CVS, Brooklyn, NY, received the
Roche Preceptor of the Year Award. The St. John’s University
Institutional Preceptor of the Year Award was given to Jen-Hui-Eng,
Pharm.D., from St. Mary’s Hospital for Children, Bayside, NY, while
Bella Kohn, Pharm.D., from Bellevue Hospital Center, New York, NY
was awarded the Outstanding Preceptor Service Award. The pharmacy
students themselves nominate preceptors to be honored with these
awards.
The event’s final award, the Teacher of the Year Award, was given
to Mary Ann Howland, Pharm. D. DABAT, FAACT and Professor of
Clinical Pharmacy, who received a standing ovation.
