July 19, 2012

On June 27, 2012, it was once again time for the Training and
Development department to recognize and honor this year’s graduates
of the Training Certificate Program. In a very special
graduation luncheon ceremony, 31 recipients were recognized, bringing the
seven year graduation total to 291.
The event was hosted by the Office of Human Resources, and in
attendance were Ms. Martha Hirst, Senior Vice President for
Operations and Treasurer; Ms. Mary Harper Hagan, Senior Vice
President for Human Resources and Strategic Planning; Rev. James

Testimonials
Mary Harper Hagan opened the ceremony with a welcome and
introduction to over 70 University employees from
17 departments, with honorees and their managers in
attendance. She acknowledged the managers for supporting
professional development at the University and for encouraging
their employees to attend the HR Certificate Program
workshops. Father Maher offered an opening prayer and Dr.
Upton extended her congratulations to the recipients, thanked them
for their perseverance, and commented how the recipients’
commitment to lifelong learning benefits the students. Martha
Hirst closed the program by commending the graduates for electing
to pursue this achievement voluntarily. She likened them to
individual threads in a tapestry - as those individual talents are
woven together the color becomes more vibrant and the tapestry
grows more superb. She closed by encouraging the graduates to
continue their learning journey and to encourage their peers to
embark on a learning journey of their own.
The recipients received a
Certificate Plaque Award that acknowledged their
commitment to life-long learning. The honorees were staff and
administrators from various University departments, representing
the academic and operations sectors, the Office of Mission and
Student Services and Institutional Advancement.
The certificate recipients completed one of three program tracks
available for
staff, professionals (
non-supervisory administrators) and
managers. Managers completed such workshops as The People
Management Series, including The Facts about Compensation, Managing
for Success, Preventing Sexual Harassment and Discrimination, and
Coaching for Exceptional Performance. Administrators and
staff completed workshops such as Quality Service, Business
Writing, and Successful Presentation Skills. All program
participants also attended Diversity Awareness training, Vincentian
Mission Orientation and Partnership for Performance (PFP)
workshops.
Since 1999, when the Training and Development department was
formed, over 30,000 participants have enhanced their learning
through the broad range of workshops offered by Human Resources.
The Training and Development Certificate Program was launched in
2003 and provides employees with the opportunity to progress
through three targeted professional development tracks by following
a defined development curriculum of core and elective
courses. The program supports the University’s strategic goal
to build an organization of strong leaders where faculty,
administrators and staff are enabled, motivated and engaged.
It builds on the St. John’s culture of life-long learning and aims
to inspire learners to make a difference.
