Rev. Michael Carroll, C.M. of St. John’s University Elected Provincial of Eastern Province of Congregation of the Mission

Rev. Michael Carroll, C.M., Executive Vice President for Mission and Branch Campuses at St. John’s University, has been elected Provincial of the Eastern Province of the Congregation of the Mission effective on June 15, 2008. He will be based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Congregation of the Mission, more commonly the Vincentians, is a Roman Catholic apostolic community of Priests and Brothers founded by Saint Vincent de Paul to follow Jesus Christ, evangelizing the poor.

Father Carroll has had a 16-year career at St. John’s University and has been responsible in spearheading the development of the Vincentian Mission plan and inspired the creation of the Vincentian Mission Certificate Program that is enriching the lives of so many within the University community.

“I know that I speak for our entire University community in expressing gratitude to Father Carroll for his service at St. John’s, especially in his most recent role as Executive Vice President for Mission and Branch Campuses,” said Rev. Donald J. Harrington, C.M., President of St. John’s University. “Father Carroll has also been responsible for programs offered through University Ministry that have enhanced the spiritual lives of our students and his contribution to the development of the Rome (Italy) campus has been extensive. I thank him for all he has done for so many of us and look forward to his continued involvement with us through his ex officio service on our Board of Trustees.”

Born and raised in Philadelphia, PA., Father Carroll attended Bishop McDevitt High School and St. Joseph’s College in Princeton, NJ, and obtained a Bachelor’s degree from Niagara University. He earned a Master’s in Divinity and Theology from Mary Immaculate Seminary and was ordained in 1977. He subsequently received a Master of Pastoral Studies from Loyola University of Chicago.

Following ordination he had various assignments, including Director of Students at St. Joseph’s Preparatory Seminary in Princeton, NJ; School Minister at Archbishop Wood High School for Boys in Warminster, PA.; Rector of Vincentian House, College Seminary of the Vincentian Fathers in Ozone Park, NY; and President of St. Joseph’s Preparatory Seminary, Princeton, NJ. At St. John’s he served as Vice President for Campus Ministry, Vice President for the University’s Rome Campus, and Executive Vice President for Student Services.

Father Carroll has served on the Board of Trustees for the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception on Long Island, and as a member of the Board of Members for St. John’s Bread & Life, Brooklyn, NY. He was a member of the Provincial Council of the Congregation of the Mission from 1995 thru 2004 and was once again asked to serve on the Council in January 2006.
