St. John's Welcomes 29 Into Catholic Faith with Sacraments of Initiation

St. John’s Office of Campus Ministry culminated a year-long Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) program last night as 29 new members of the University community received the sacraments of initiation at a formal ceremony at the school’s St. Thomas More Church. Most Reverend Ignatius A. Catanello, D.D., Auxiliary Bishop in the Diocese of Brooklyn, administered baptismal and confirmation rites and 11 members also received the Holy Eucharist for the first time.

Debate Society to Quarterfinals at National Championship; Third in Northeast Sweepstakes

St. John’s Debate Society emerged from a field of 132 teams ranging from California to South Africa to the United Kingdom to become one of the top 16 teams at the U.S. University National Championship Tournament held on the campus of the University of Vermont in Burlington during the first weekend of April.

St. John’s Doctoral Fellowship Provides Opportunity for Ph.D. Student to Co-Research National Journal Article

With the assistance of a St. John’s University doctoral fellowship, Ph. D. candidate Grace Kong co-researched an article on the impact of in-home cognitive-behavioral therapy in the elderly living in rural Alabama. Published by the Psychology of Aging, a journal of the American Psychological Association (APA), the article draws attention to the lack of access to healthcare among rural older adults.

Ozanam Scholars Impact the IMPACT National Student Conference

Academic Lecture Series: Anatomy of Prejudice - Queens Campus

In response to the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. over 30 years ago, Jane Elliott devised the controversial and startling, “Blue Eyes/Brown Eyes” exercise. This, now famous, exercise labels participants as inferior or superior based solely upon the color of their eyes and exposes them to the experience of being a minority. Everyone who is exposed to Jane Elliott’s work is dramatically affected by it.

Committee for Latin American and Caribbean Studies Hosts Free Workshops To Benefit Local Immigrants

St. John’s University’s Committee for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS) is offering a series of free workshops on various educational topics to benefit immigrants and their families. In addition, CLACS will offer free ESL (English as Second Language) classes at various levels on Wednesday and Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings through June.

Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus Inspires Crowd at St. John’s; Announces Partnership Between University and Grameen America

Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Prof. Muhammad Yunus, Founder of Grameen Bank, paid a special visit to St. John’s and its Queens Campus to announce a new partnership venture between the University and Grameen America. The appearance was part of Grameen America’s Open House and Spring Fair held in Carnesecca Arena.
