St. John’s Reduces Carbon Footprint with Purchase of New Public Safety Hybrid Vehicles

St. John’s University students and administrators recently gathered on the Queens campus’ Great Lawn to introduce 10 new hybrid vehicles acquired as a part of the University’s commitment to reduce its carbon footprint. As a participant in New York City’s “Mayoral Challenge for Climate Change for 30 in 10,” St. John’s has committed to reduce its carbon emissions released into the atmosphere by 30 percent even before the year 2017.

As part of their end-of-semester Academic-Service Learning project, they collected and recycled unsold textbooks, food and clothing, developed a carpool initiative, analyzed the efficiency of water usage on campus, and climbed into several dumpsters to separate recyclable waste materials (paper, cardboard, bottles and cans) from bins located behind the Staten Island Campus Center in an effort to create a “green” campus.

Biology Professor Gives Academic Service- Learning a New Twist

“I had two misconceptions,” says Biology Professor Laura Schramm, Ph.D. “I assumed Academic Service-Learning (AS-L) could only be incorporated into social science courses and that it meant working in soup kitchens and volunteering in homeless shelters. But I was wrong. It ultimately means giving back to the community and finding your own personal way to do so.”

Each of them has received a copy of the inspiring best-seller, "Three Cups of Tea: One Man’s Mission to Promote Peace…One School at a Time," by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin, and will be expected to discuss the book in several settings, including their Discover New York class, in the fall.
