• Annual Summer Concert Blends Music and Memories 9:00 AM The persistent rain failed to dampen the enthusiasm of the many alumni and friends who gathered in Marillac Terrace on the Queens campus on Wednesday, July 29, 2009 for the 11th Annual Summer Concert. Featuring the Queens Symphony Orchestra, the concert was a joint effort of St. John’s University’s Offices of Community Relations and Alumni Relations and The School of Education.

  St. John’s Chapter of International Education Honor Society Wins Excellence Award 9:00 AM Kappa Eta, the St. John’s Queens campus chapter of Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society in Education recently won the Society’s 2007-2009 Achieving Chapter Excellence (ACE) award. The Executive Board and Counselors of the St. John’s Kappa Eta chapter will accept this award at Kappa Delta Pi’s 47th Biennial Convocation in Orlando, Florida on October 29 – 31, 2009.

Durgin Pharmacy Education Center 9:00 AM To honor a St. John’s alumna, educator and administrator for her contributions to the academic life of the University, St. John’s College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions recently renamed the college’s Health Education Resource Center and on-campus Drug Information Center for Sr. Jane M. Durgin, C.I.J. The College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions dedicated the space on July 7, 2009.

• Repair Work Near Marillac Hall 9:00 AM Emergency work to repair a steam pipe near Marillac Hall at the Queens campus begins on Monday, August 10 at 8 a.m. While the plaza between Marillac and Newman Halls will be barricaded, there will be continued access to Marillac Hall and Marillac Cafeteria

But St. John’s University students Elsen and Susan Jacob recently had the rare opportunity to mingle with the Holy See’s Permanent Observer to the United Nations, Archbishop Celestino Migliore, and other U.N. diplomats and senior officials and, at the same time, rub elbows with 48 other students from more than a dozen Catholic universities across the United States.

• St. John’s Students Learn about Catholic Social and Moral Teaching at Seminar Sponsored by the Path to Peace Foundation 9:00 AM It’s an opportunity that most Catholics will never experience, and certainly not as young adults. But St. John’s University students Elsen and Susan Jacob recently had the rare opportunity to mingle with the Holy See’s Permanent Observer to the United Nations, Archbishop Celestino Migliore, and other U.N. diplomats and senior officials and, at the same time, rub elbows with 48 other students from more than a dozen Catholic universities across the United States.

• St. John’s New Sustainability Committee Plants Organic Garden 9:00 AM St. John’s is in the process of ‘cultivating its own (organic) garden.’ The student-run venture marks the University’s most recent achievement in response to Mayor Bloomberg’s Mayoral Challenge to reduce carbon emissions by 2017. On August 18, representatives from Student Government, the Earth Club and Student Sustainability Coordinators, were joined by members of the newly formed University-wide Sustainability Committee to cast the first seeds.
