Research Month 2012

Each year, during the month of April, St. John's University hosts a number of events that focuses on the extraordinary research of faculty and students. Designated as Research Month, these events take place on the Queens and Staten Island campuses, where students present their research projects to the campus community.  On April 11–19, the Queens campus held film screenings and performance arts, poster session in the Taffner Field House, fine arts presentations, and panel discussions.

There was a day of research-related events on the Staten Island campus (April 19). Christopher Cuccia, Academic Assistant Vice President, Staten Island campus noted that, "Student Research Day on the Staten Island campus has traditionally provided an opportunity for students to showcase their scholarly research and unique academic interests. This year was no different, as over 90 students were mentored by faculty members on research projects that spanned the academic disciplines. More than 40 laptop and/or poster presentations were on display.”

The occasion highlighted the significant academic accomplishments of our students.  In addition to the research presentations, there were activities geared toward faculty including, Faculty Research Forum, a reception honoring grant recipients, and a Faculty Book Reception.  On April 26, the Center for Teaching and Learning Technology Fellows presented their research on teaching and technology. During the month, there were also three interdisciplinary research lunches focused on Research Methodology and The New York Public Library (NYPL), Vincentian Institute of Social Action (VISA), the University Mission, and Writing Biography.

“These events create an opportunity for students and faculty to share their research experiences as well as gain insight in the year ahead,” said Maura Flannery, Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning, Queens campus.
