St. John’s University Employees Give Back
to the Community by Cooking at Ronald McDonald House
Following in the footsteps of St. Vincent de Paul, nine
University employees came together and reached out to those in need
of comfort and support. On Thursday, June 26, these faculty,
administrators and staff, members of the second cohort of the
Vincentian Mission Certificate Program, prepared a home cooked meal
for families staying at the Ronald McDonald House in New Hyde Park,
New York. As part of the Vincentian Mission Certificate Program,
faculty, staff and administrators meet monthly to learn and
experience the mission of St. Vincent de Paul. A large part of St.
Vincent’s teachings were about the importance of service, so a 50
hour community service commitment is required upon completion of
the program.
The Ronald McDonald House of Long Island, where the group
visited, is a “home-away-from-home” for severely ill children and
their families while undergoing critical medical treatment at
nearby Schneider Children's Hospital.
As part of their service to these families, St. John’s employees
baked meatloaves; prepared macaroni and cheese served with string
beans, mushrooms and onions; and served watermelon and several
cakes for dessert.
“We not only had a lot of fun cooking together, but enjoyed the
chance to offer a comforting meal to more than 60 people who were
going through a particularly rough time in their lives,” said Joan
Zanni, Executive Secretary, Office of the President.
